Building Anchor Links in Squarespace
Today, I’m going to show you the new and improved way to create anchor links within Squarespace. In case you don’t know, an anchor link, instead of taking you to a whole new page, drops you down to a specific part of a webpage. It’s often used at the top navigation of a page to easily send the user to a lower or bottom section. You actually used to need to do a little bit of custom coding to get anchor links working on Squarespace, but thankfully that is no longer the case!
This is great if you don’t have a whole page for an idea (like an About Us section) but you still want to highlight it within your site’s navigation.
To begin, click into ‘edit’ mode on whatever PAGE your anchor will be on (usually home), and hover over the section you’d like to create an anchor for. Hit ‘edit section’, scroll down within the pop-up until you see ‘anchor link’, and you can add the name you’d like for this ANCHOR. Just be sure to remember or write down what you chose. Hit save and exit.
Now, in the ‘main navigation’, hit the ‘plus’ button to add to navigation, and scroll down to ‘link’ at the very bottom.
PAGE and ANCHOR are capitalized here because they are placeholders that you’ll add your choices into, just wanted to make it very visually clear.
Type “/[PAGE]#[ANCHOR]”. It does not need to open in a new tab. Hit save, refresh, and test it out. If it sends you to the right spot, congratulations, you did it! It’s also always a good idea to check if it also works on mobile. It should, but it’s a good habit.
Next, I’ll recommend you check out my video on the ways to add videos to your site, which you can find here. It’s been a popular video lately, with people looking for new ways to spruce up their home pages, so I hope you enjoy!
