Kit Email Marketing Tutorial for Beginners - Forms, Sequences, & Automations (2025)

Using Kit (formerly ConvertKit) to build forms for your website can seem daunting, but is very simple. I'll show you how to go through the three steps you need to build your subscriber pool with Kit, by building forms, planning an email structure, and connecting them all with automated rules.

Learning How To Market Better With Kit
Kit (or formerly ConvertKit) is an email marketing tool I’ve been using for a while now to gather form fills on my website as well as schedule out automated email campaigns for those that subscribe to my emails. Here’s how to use three of the major functions within Kit to build out an automated campaign from scratch that gives you valuable analytics and an easy to manage subscriber count.
Creating Landing Pages & Forms
Creating landing pages and forms are going to be pretty similar, and how to get there is the same, but since I mostly use form creation for how my site operates, that’s what we’ll be learning off of.
First, at the navigation on your Kit homepage, you’re going to go to the ‘grow’ section, and then click on ‘landing page & forms’. Here it’ll ask you to pick if you want to make a dedicated page to send potential customers to so they can sign up for your services (a landing page) or a form you can use however you’d like on other sites. When I chose form, I was able to choose from a variety of templates for form design; I like my forms a little simpler, as you can see directly above this blog copy, so I chose the ‘inline form’ with the Clare template. This is also a great form to start off with because it’s so simple, it doesn’t pull focus away from your site’s visual elements, and it cleanly presents all the necessary information with no fluff.
Here you can adjust the following aspects of your form:
Name of the form
What elements of the form are used (default is an entry for email and a subscribe button, I added the ability to enter in a first name which I recommend)
Style elements of any buttons, such as font, background and text color, border radius, and font weight
‘Built With Kit’ emblem
From there, click ‘save’ and your form is done!
Settings For Your Form
For some more advanced customization with your Kit form, you can hit the ‘settings’ tab and adjust a few more details on the back end:
If the form gives a success message or redirects to an external page after the customer has filled out the form
Customize the domain of the form
Offer an incentive email to confirm interest (this is very good at keeping out bot submissions)
There are even more advanced features under the settings tab, but I don’t recommend messing with these too much, especially when you’re just starting out with building these email campaigns. Once you’ve finished setting up your form, you will be able to access the form code in formats like JavaScript or HTML, whatever is easiest for your website builder of choice (assuming you’re using Squarespace, HTML is your friend here).
Personalized Email Sequences
Now that your forms are built it’s time to get your emails ready. Go to ‘send’ -> ‘sequences’ -> ‘new sequence’.
I personally have an email template ready to go, but in this field you can write out the email you want to send to subscribers once they’ve signed up with your Kit form. When your email has been written, you can toggle on ‘publish’, and if you want the email to send to your subscriber the moment they sign up, change the day toggle to ‘0 days’. Click ‘publish changes’ and you are good to go with this first email!
You can also hit ‘add email’ to write more emails in the sequence to follow up with your subscribers past the initial message if that’s something you’d like to do.
Connecting Forms to Sequences
You’ve built your forms and written your email sequences, and now the only thing left for you to do is to combine the two together.
Under ‘automate’, go to ‘rules’, which I tend to prefer over the option for ‘visual automations’. Click on ‘new rule’, and set the trigger as ‘subscribe to a form’, and click the form that you’ve just built to go into this part of the automation.
Finally, set the action to ‘subscribe to a sequence’, and pull in the email sequence you just built out. You’re done! I do recommend adding in a tag for a person, like if they came to a form from a YouTube link or anything like that, but that’s up to you.
