How to find your why
I've been doing a lot of reading (reading books for fun is new for me) and a lot of thinking lately... if you follow me on Instagram you might have seen my post on Sunday night that went a little something like this:
"My new favorite thing is reading in the jacuzzi tub! Tonight I started a book called Get Over Your Damn Self, and thought this little bit was worth sharing... "You need a bulletproof WHY to get you through the tough times. And that WHY has to be about you and for you."
Why do you make music, or why are you in business?? Do you let that motivate you every day? Give me a thumbs up in the comments if you have a clear why!"
That post has gotten lots comments and everyone has gone deeper than just giving me a thumbs up... and I feel so inspired to elaborate a little more via email today because I think this concept is so important!
If you don't have a "why" or if you want to better define yours, try asking yourself the following questions...
- What do I offer (music/product/service)?
- Why do I offer it?
- What are the struggles my audience faces?
- How can I empower my audience?
These are questions I recently came up with while trying to define my own why! While the questions might appear simple, I challenge you to actually put pen to paper and write whatever comes to mind. I think you'll be surprised what you come up with!
After answering all those questions for myself, here's what I concluded:
I believe music speaks when words can’t.
I believe design can make people feel things.
I believe in the power of authentic marketing.
I believe everyone needs community and a place to belong.
I believe it takes creativity, determination, and confidence to be successful.
And that’s why I founded Designing the Row.
I partner with musicians and creative businesses who want confidence in their website and online presence… I teach online marketing strategy and the importance of messaging to help others grow an audience they love interacting with… and I create community to inspire and empower those around me!
Now, not only am I 100x more clear on what I do and what my mission is, but I'm able to put into words WHY I do what I do. And that... that feels amazing and gives me a sense of purpose I didn't have before.
I hope you'll give this exercise a try! And if you'd like to share your why... share yours in the comments below or comment on my Instagram post. I'd love to hear from you.
