Bestie Feature: Nia Nicholls
Y'all! This girl is only 17 and she's already making waves in music. She currently lives in the UK but has her sights set on Nashville. Make sure you follow her on socials and keep up with her amazing journey!
Tell us about yourself! What do you do and what has your journey been like getting to this point?
I'm a singer/songwriter. I play the guitar and piano also. I write songs based on my own experiences. I heard Nashville is the place to be when you're a country singer and so I begged my parents for 4 years to take me to Nashville before they finally took me when I was 13. I've gone back almost every year since and I'm turning 17 this year. My journey has been a bit difficult as I'm drawn to Nashville and the people and I'm from the UK. So, getting myself and my music out there is hard when I'm thousands of miles away. However, with my parents support I've made so many new connections and I have people who book me in for gigs as soon as they find out I'm coming over! Everybody's very supportive and I'm so grateful. Someday I'm going to move to Nashville!
What’s a usual day-in-the-life look like for you?
I go to Salisbury Wiltshire College in the UK. I'm on a music course and I've met so many wonderful and talented people! However, I get so restless very quickly and so I often get very bored on the days I'm in college. So to pass time I write songs and play them to my friends and I love hearing their feedback. Throughout the day I'm usually in contact with somebody from Tennessee about music, gigs and advice!
Does community play a role in your career? How so?
People aren't as into country music in the UK as they are in America, but I've met so many people within my community who always run open mics down the road or host gigs in town and it's fun to perform at them!
What’s your favorite part about the music industry?
My favourite part would be the writing and producing. I'm so fascinated the way somebody can take a song I wrote in my bedroom when I was 15 and turn it into something that sounds as professional as a song on the radio! I'm fascinated by how quickly session musicians learn a song they've never heard before and make it sound as though they've been playing it their whole lives. I'm fascinated with how producers can hear riffs and instrumental melody lines within an acoustic song. To me, that's incredible!
Knowing what you know now, if you could go back 5 years and give yourself one piece of advice, what would that be?
If I went back 5 years I would be 12 years old and I would probably say that you're not stupid for overthinking things too much, or for feeling so many feelings all at once, all the time. That's what makes a songwriter and you'll get so many songs that people enjoy listening too, out of experiences that left you wondering what you did to deserve them in the first place.
