My #wcw today is Ashley Kervabon. She's been making waves with her new organization, #WomenCrush, and I'm so excited for you to get a look behind the scenes at all she does!
Tell us about yourself! What do you do and what has your journey been like getting to this point?
I am the creator of #WomenCrush - an organization that helps rising female artists by creating national performance opportunities as well as helps them connect with the industry. As a songwriter myself, I have experienced the roller-coaster of emotions that is being a female artist in the music biz. Producers hitting on you, industry leaders not taking you seriously, not being able to book gigs because you don't enough of a draw - I got to the point where I had enough experience interning and freelancing for labels, agencies, venues where I just wanted to have something in the music industry that is mine. So I created #WomenCrush to help other female artists like me who may not know where to go to perform their original songs, or how to go about releasing an EP, etc.
It's really been a long-time coming - an overwhelming process - lots of hard but it's also incredibly rewarding!!! Hearing artists's endless gratitude after a showcase gives me LIFE. Getting an email from a potential partner or sponsor is the absolute best part of my day. I love what I do and I look forward to sharing #WomenCrush with the rest of the USA & the world!
What’s a usual day-in-the-life look like for you?
Lots of research, lots of emails, lots of social media posts and making contact lists. I'm always listening to local rising artists too. Usually in my office (aka my couch) snuggled up with my puppy. Or at my favorite local coffee shop.
Does community play a role in your career? How so?
Absolutely! If there were no music community there would be no #WomenCrush. This whole thing started because the women in various music industry networking groups asked me about expanding to other cities & blogs were asking me to be added to our email lists. The support of everyone means the world to me!
What’s your favorite part about the music industry?
The passion. I love ambitious artists, driven industry people who do whatever they can to make it. It's not a perfect industry but it's definitely a magical one.
Knowing what you know now, if you could go back 5 years and give yourself one piece of advice, what would that be?
Don't be so scared!
